Why do I need a vignette?

In Austria, a valid vignette is required to use motorways and expressways. The toll obligation applies to all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. Enforcement is carried out by stationary and mobile surveillance systems as well as police checks.

Revenue from the vignette goes towards the expansion and maintenance of the Austrian motorway network. ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft) is responsible for management and enforcement.

Important: Anyone driving on toll roads without a valid vignette risks a replacement toll of up to 240 euros plus the vignette obligation.

Very helpful guide. I did not know that an additional toll is required for the Brenner. Good thing I informed myself beforehand!

The vignette is available online through the official ASFINAG website, at petrol stations, tobacco shops, border crossings and selected automobile clubs. The digital vignette can only be purchased online.

The sticker vignette is stuck to the inside of the windscreen and is visible. The digital vignette is registered to the vehicle number plate and is invisible - enforcement is carried out electronically via cameras.

Yes, motorcycles also require a vignette. There are special motorcycle vignettes that are cheaper than car vignettes. The motorcycle vignette is attached to the fork or another suitable location.
